A wonderful person too soon departed. We remember his smile, his energy, his passion and the incredible, selfless work he did with his students in Asuncion and with the members of the U.S. Embassy families. Thank you and God bless.

Andy was, and shall continue to be, my friend. I'll keep this short and simple. Andy - Andrés to his mom, dad, and a few others, such as, depending upon the mood,Maria, left a lasting impression on each person he came to know. Thanks Andy, for enriching my life. Your friend, Frankie.

Dear Andres--I remember teaching at ASMadrid was that much more fun because you and Maria were there. Some of you guys had a boys' night out in Aravaca playing basketball once a week. I went one night to watch you old fogeys play, and you all did amazingly well. In fact, you won that evening. Then we went out to a bar and had razor clams and vino tinto. You were always smiling and I loved hearing the story of how you and Maria met on an airplane. You got off with her and the rest is history. You were a great correspondent and kept up with us long after the "Madrid 10" left Madrid. That city was never the same, and neither was ASM. When we built our log home, you and Maria drove all the way down from NY to visit us. We had a wonderful 24 hours together, and then you drove right back. Facebook happened and we kept up that way after email became old hat. We loved seeing pictures of your travels. I loved seeing your "likes" next to photos and posts of liberal causes, and promises to meet again some day at Taverna Pacheco in Madrid. In your passing, all too soon, you taught me that life is for today and to take nothing for granted, to appreciate what I have and to tell people I love that I love them, NOW. I seem to recall you were not religious, but in my mind I have been singing Joan Baez's version of "Amazing Grace" with you in mind. Rest in peace, Andres. Peace.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Andres’ passing. I admired him as a colleague and valued him as a friend. The energy and commitment he put into his teaching and gave to his students was inspiring. I remember his humour, kindness and easy going nature during our years together in Madrid. I remember the excitement in his voice describing his travels in Russia and Cuba during our last two encounters. He was a warm and generous person. I offer my sincere condolences to Maria and his family.

Mr. Delgado was my math teacher at the American School of Asuncion. He was extremely patient and kind with me. He helped me get good grades in math when other teachers couldn't get through. But most of all he was a great person and teacher who inspired me to become a teacher. RIP Mr. Delgado. My wife Ann and I will both miss you.

I, too, am deeply saddened by the passing of Andy Delgado. As my math teacher at ASA, he was THE BEST..., caring, funny, and patient. Only good memories do I have of him and Maria. Thank you Andy for all the sacrifices you made to speak into the lives of all your students even though you wouldn't have thought them to be sacrifices...it was just the way you lived your life.
Abrazos a Maria y toda la familia. Que Dios les dé Su paz palpable.

Mr. Delgado was my math teacher and basketball coach at ASA in Asuncion - and wonderful at both! I will never forget sitting in his math class, with his patient explanations, or his endless drills on the basketball court. His calm demeanor, his high standards, his ability and willingness to explain new concepts and his patience helped make me who I am today. And I will never forget the excitement at ASA when he married Maria! Maria - I am so sorry for your loss -
Thank you Andy for all the time you spent with us -

...each and every one of us is born with innate gifts. Andy - Andrés - was a gifted mathematician. It was a gift that he shared with me way back when we were in our early teens. Andrés -Andy - was also special in many other ways. What pleases me today is understanding that, beside the pain each one of us is undergoing, Andy has contributed toward our becoming a better community.

I have good memories of "Mr. Delgado" and ASA. Though it's been almost 37 years for me, I remember quite clearly the love he had for math. I was amazed once when a couple of us had a followup question at the end of a our class period and he took 10 or 15 minutes to explain where the concept would go next. Fortunately he gave us a pass explaining our tardiness to the next class :).
I also remember him as the basketball coach while I was there (Asuncion). I particularly remember how he would drill us on layups. I thought he was joking the first time he said if we missed we would have to run up and down the court. Oddly, he had the gift of not making it seem like it was a bad thing, just helping us take easy shots like layups seriously and getting us used to sprinting up and down the court so we would be more competitive later on. We did end up with pretty good teams those years.
My education and career needed those underpinnings to succeed, so thank you!

At the American School of Asuncion, we used a Guarani phrase, Che Manduara, meaning, Remembrance, and that it will be for all those he taught in Paraguay. His spirit lives in us all...

I am so very, very sorry to hear of Andy's passing. We were friends and colleagues at the American School of Asuncíon for four years. Andy was a gentle man with a subtle sense of humor. He always had a ready smile and a kind word for all. We have not seen each other for many years, but I've always felt that the world was a better place with him in it. Maria, I am so sorry for your loss.

Though it has been far too long since we last saw Andy, perhaps 35 years, we remember him and Maria fondly. We remember many hours working and visiting together at ASA and in Asuncion itself - the occasional day trip to some neighboring town for dinner or exploration, visits to each other's homes for a swim or a party. In fact, it was Andy and Maria's hospitality during our first days in Asuncion that made our transition so seamless. They lent us their home while they were in Chile. I remember feeling so welcome and like we'd known them forever when we finally met. I remember the day that the twins were born, the prides and joys of both Andy and Maria. Andy was a good friend, a kind and honorable man, a terrific and understanding teacher. We are grateful for having known him. We express our heartfelt sympathy for Maria, Andrea and Jessica.
