So many years have gone by since I last saw my Cousin Jan. I remember when I was a little girl, he always had a trick up his sleeve when we would visit:)
Love to all of the family, and to those relatives I have not yet met.
Wishing you peace,
Julie

There was no one I enjoyed working with more than Jan. He shared a very special part of my adoption journey. When I was trying so hard to become a parent, Jan would often coach me on what parenting really meant. He made it clear to me that becoming a parent went way beyond my needs. He reminded me that I need to focus on the needs of my children, whoever they might be.
Now, 6 years later I am the father of two amazing children. Jan's spirit is always with me. I can remember him laughing when I told him my son took his first steps. "You're in for it now!," he joked.
He taught me to laugh at adversity, to enjoy a sunny day, and that there is pleasure in small things.
I'm better for having known him. His spirit lives on. Thank you Jan.

Dear Greenfield Family,
My heart aches when I think of Jan being gone. Although we did not see one another as frequently as I would have liked, everytime we were together it seemed we gained a new friend, a new bond. I'll never forget him. He'll always be alive within me. You all have my deepest condolences on the passing of this great man.

I was in some classes at LBHS with Jan and on the track team.If I remember correctly he didnt come out till Senior year(maybe Junior yr? BUT, what an impression he made...a powerfully fast sprinter! I remember seeing him get on the line with humongous strong looking black sprinters from Lawrence, Uniondale, Freeport etc" and the standard(but true) stereotype of the black sprinter superiority was obliterated as this jewish kid from Long Beach just blew everyone away. Sadly, he false started 2X in the Nassau Championships of 1967 and was DQ'd from going to the State Championships in Buffalo. What a shame...I remember he was very upset and teary(with good cause!) I dont remember hearing about him him running at UWV but later in life I saw him or heard him! About mid to late 70's I was with my wife Barbara('LBHS'68) and we were walking around the Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo NY,when I heard a voice I recognized from High School...I rounded the corner and saw Jan, on a rope strung between 2 trees, juggling and harrassing the crowd of on lookers ( typical!). I met his Israeli wife, heard about his training in Paris , and reminisced some. I last saw Jan at the LBHS 1967 class reunion where he was the life of the party and led everyone in dancing up a storm to the "oldies"! No one would guess his age, as his energy was like a 21 yr old! I regret not taking him up on his then invite to visit and kayak with him down his way! He will be forever in my regular prayers for a peaceful rest!

In Memory of Jan Greenfield - a Sonnet
It’s all the circus. In our dark hours
We realize that. To keep the clubs in air,
The balls spinning , is sum of our powers,
And what we can to shield us from despair.
He laughed – and flung the spinning balls up still --
And as the tumor seethed within his brain
And with such strength as summoned but by will
He gave himself to succor others’ pain.
Gents and Ladies! Children of All Ages!
Behold the lesson in the center ring!
Learn! See how the clown may teach the sages!
And scorn in joy the doom that fate must bring.
For he who juggles in the face of death
Wins victory, e’en with his final breath.
