Nishan J. Abkarian of Middletown, a retired Teacher at the Otisville Prison and a longtime resident of the area, died on April 27, 2018 in ORMC.  He was 89.

The son of the late Jacob and Alice Vartanian Abkarian he was born on September 28, 1928.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and graduated from New York University.

Nishan formerly taught at the New Hampton and Otisville Training Schools.  He was talented in Upholstery and repairing and cleaning of Oriental Rugs.  He was a life member of the Howells Fire Company.

Survivors include his wife Maude Abkarian of Middletown.  His children Nancy Mansheffer and her husband James of Middletown.  Patricia Mitchell and her husband  Robert of Middletown; Nishan Abkarian and his wife Laura of Warwick and John Abkarian of Middletown.  His grandchildren: Nicole and her husband James; Shaun; James; Robert; Michael; Carly; Carrie and Scott.  His great-grandchildren Isabella; James and Lilly.   He is also survived by his nieces.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
