Joseph Grant Bertholf, 95, passed away peacefully at home on June 2, 2024. He was born on April 2nd, 1929, in Middletown, NY, to Mary Ann and Corwin Bertholf. Joseph bravely served his country as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps, where he was awarded the purple heart after being injured at the Chosin Reservoir. After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to Middletown, where he met and married the love of his life, Thelma. They enjoyed 71 wonderful years of marriage.
Joseph and Thelma settled in New Hampton, NY, where Joseph worked for the New York State Division of Youth. He served as the Director of the Goshen Secure Center, retiring after a dedicated 40-year career. In retirement, Joseph and Thelma found joy in traveling and volunteering with the Lions Club, where they were lifelong members.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife Thelma; his sister Lavonne; and his three children: Denise Tonic, James (Patricia) Bertholf, and Deborah (Andrew) Mills. His greatest joy was watching his grandchildren grow and reveling in their accomplishments. He leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Susan Graves, Ricky Bertholf, Sonya Blade (Cliff), Richard Hitt, Christa Tonic (John), Joseph Bertholf (Karen), Cassandra Mills (Matthew), Brynn McKeon (Corey), and James Bertholf (Sophia). Joseph also leaves behind many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents, Mary Ann and Corwin, and his brothers Corwin, Douglas, William, and Melvin.
A private memorial will be held for the family.
