Herbert A. Freer
July 11, 1931-March 11, 2015
Town of Wallkill
Herbert Freer, 83 a lifetime resident of the Town of Wallkill was called to heaven on Wednesday, March 11th. Herb was the son of the late, Leroy Eager Freer and Edith Decker Freer, and the brother of the late, Stanley Freer and Louise Freer Gavlick.
Herbert Freer was a self made man. Over the years, as a contractor and a mason, he worked on many projects throughout Orange and Sullivan counties. He graduated from Middletown High School in the class of 1948. He went on to study and graduate from Orange County Community College and SUNY Delhi.
Herb was one of the town fathers that helped shape the Town of Wallkill. He was on the Planning Board and the Board of Appeals from 1960-1970; and was instrumental in the decision on Woodstock in 1969. Herb was a member of the Middletown Elks local number 1097, Webb Horton Presbyterian Church, NRA, and the Ex. Sportman's Club.
Herbert loved animals, had a great sense of humor, and had a big heart. He believed that "the salt of a man is measured by his efforts, not by the color of his skin or nationality or beliefs." He was a high school and college athlete who played football for the Middies and also semi-pro ball. He loved the outdoors, in particularly, Sullivan County, where he hiked, hunted and fished since his youth.
Herb Freer is survived by his good friend of 60 years and wife, Jean Freer. He leaves behind two loving daughters, author/historian, Debra Freer of Atlanta, GA and Vicki Gorss of Montgomery, NY.
Words from the family: "We will love you forever and far beyond."
Private Service and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements have been made with Ralston-Lippincott-Hasbrouck-Ingrassia Funeral Home. 72 West Main Street Middletown, NY 845-343-6023
