Obituary of Joann Seligman-Hargabus

Joann Seligman Hargabus of Middletown, N.Y. passed away on May 13, 2022 at Garnet Health Medical Center. She was 70. The daughter of the late Arthur and Gerta Seligman, she was born on July 22, 1951 in Middletown, N.Y. A beloved sister and wife, Joann had the most beautiful and infectious smile and personality. She had a long professional career devoted to helping people who had experienced physical and emotional disabilities. She was a longtime Director and was the Co-founder of Action Toward Independence and helped build the organization over the years with programs in Orange and Sullivan Counties. Joann was instrumental in securing funding for multiple programs by her participation on committees and boards in Orange and Sullivan Counties. She helped grow the agency to a million dollar budget. She also mentored many advocates over the years and that brought her great joy. Her job was not just work, it was a passion for those who wanted to live independently and she wanted to be a part of that. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Joann. An eternal optimist, she was devoted to the care of many including her mother Gerta, who passed away last August at 100 years of age. Survivors include her husband Robert Hargabus at home. Her daughters Christine Hargabus (Richard) of Elizabehttown, N.C. Donna Dzinski (Bruce) of Mullica Hill, N.J.; Heidi Vanderslice (John) of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Susan Wood (Brian) of Cobbleskill, N.Y. Her brother Stephen Seligman of San Francisco, CA. and her sister Nanette Greene (Mark) of Newtown, CT. Her grandchildren Lauren; Kristy; Sarah; Christopher; Chelsey; Conner; Jenna; Robert; Adam; and Benjamin. She is also survived by her six great-grandchildren and her nieces Casey and Abigail. As well as her beloved dog Angelina. Visitation hours will be held on Monday May 16, 2022 from 10 A.M.- 12 Noon with a Funeral Service at 12 Noon at the Ralston-Lippincott-Hasbrouck-Ingrassia Funeral Home, Inc. 72 West Main Street Middletown, N.Y.
