Obituary of Rachel Barry

Our beloved mother, Rachel Barry, entered heaven peacefully on March 13, 2022 at the age of 88 with her loving family by her side at the Valley View Center in Goshen, NY. Mom dedicated her life to serving her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and to raising her children in a loving, Christian, home. As a longtime active member of the Denton Presbyterian Church, Mom served as Elder, Deacon and Sunday School teacher. For many years she served as the Youth Group Leader always filling her station wagon with rowdy teens excited to be going to the Friday night meetings. Mom was involved with Women's AGLOW Fellowship and enjoyed her time as a literacy volunteer using her Bible as the tool for teaching others how to read. She genuinely lived according to John 15:12, loving and caring for everyone in response to God's love for her. Holiday dinners at home always included at least one or two friends or neighbors who would have otherwise been alone or unable to provide for themselves. The daughter of James & Florence Terpstra, Mom was born on November 28, 1933 in Paterson, NJ as the ninth of ten children. Survivors include her daughter: Beth (David) Grass, of Walker Valley, NY; son: Thomas (Donna) Barry of Slate Hill, NY; daughter-in-law: Dawn Barry of Westtown, NY. Mom was "Nana" to 11 grandchildren: Thomas (Catherine), Daniel (Jessica), Joseph (Emily), Matthew (Heather), David, Marie (Connor), Paige, David (Kodie), Adam, Scott and Dakota and 9 great grandchildren. Together Mom and Dad raised two of their grandchildren, Scott and Dakota. Mom was predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, Matthew E. (2016), son, Matthew D. (1999), daughter, Kim (1997) as well as her parents and all nine of her siblings. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 19th from 10:00 to 11:00 am, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 am, at the Denton Presbyterian Church, 22 County Road 56, New Hampton, NY 10958. The Reverend Peter Johnson and Reverend Dorinda Violante will officiate. Burial will be at the Pine Hill Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the church.
